The Mascot – Napa Valley Red Wine – 2019

The grapes used to produce the only wine in The Mascot line come from the youngest vineyards on the Harlan estate, aged between 6 and 12 years. The vineyard plots come from the first Harlan estate, the prestigious Bond, considered a grand cru area of Napa, and Promontory, the family’s latest acquisition in 2008, nestled between Oakville and Yountville with rockier soils of volcanic origin. The wine is vinified separately for each estate, where it ages for at least three years in new French oak, except for the Promontory portion, which is aged in large Austrian oak, and then blended only in the bottle, where it rests for an additional 18 months. The Mascot aims to give a different soul to the typical Napa Cabernet Sauvignon. It is not a wine of great depth and power, but one of great refinement, with broader aromas of fruit, beyond the typical tobacco and vegetal nuances. On the palate, it is more elegant and delicate, but does not hide its great structure, which allows for enormous aging potential.

Description

The Mascot was initially created as a wine without a label or name, but as a bottle to be shared among friends at the table. The project was launched in 2007 by Will Harlan, son of Bill Harlan, founder of one of the most iconic wineries in California’s Napa Valley: Harlan Estate. The aim of this label was to produce a pure Cabernet Sauvignon with a more immediate drinkability, which differed from the wines produced in the individual parcels of the estate; in fact, the vineyards used are the youngest of the Harlan Estate, Bond, and Promontory crus. The first bottles of The Mascot have been sold in very limited quantities since the 2008 vintage. The inspiration for the label design came from the entire estate team’s shared passion for dogs. It depicts Prince, a white English bull terrier with an unusual history, having been the mascot for several baseball, football, and hockey teams sponsored by the National Bank of Pittsburgh. Prince’s owner is the bank’s director, who lets his Bull Terrier roam freely around the offices, greeting employees and customers and standing guard. The kindness and loyalty of this four-legged mascot represent values dear to the Harlan family. The Mascot represents the true essence of Napa Valley Cabernet, encapsulating the quality of the wines from the three Harlen estates.
