Sottimano – Barbaresco Basarin – 2021

In the commune of Neive we find many vineyards of great quality, a notable mention is that of Basarin, a very extensive slope between the southeast and southwest around 350 meters where fairly compact clay soils predominate for ready-to-drink or aging wines. The Sottimano winery has a vineyard over 40 years old from which it produces several thousand bottles but despite this the care in the process is the same, grape selection with spontaneous vinification in steel tanks for 30 days with aging in barriques (10% new) for 18-22 months. In its simplicity it is a wine that presents itself very well, excellent elegance with spicy notes of good intensity while on the palate it possesses balance, complexity and minerality with pleasant tannins to complement.

Description

The winemakers of yesteryear still exist. The Sottimano family is a fantastic example of how that world is the basis of Langa life, we are talking about the 1960s-70s when Rino finished wine school, founded his own company and decided to start making wine. Few family hectares but at Neive, one of the best areas for the production of Barbaresco, the difficulties were not easy in fact sacrifices were the basis of every day in a complicated historical period. Skilled as few were, he was able to bridge those moments by immediately making masterful quality with wines with a traditional yet innovative touch, a lot of work in the vineyard along with careful selection of clusters and subdivision of the various plots in order to obtain more detailed products. Compared to the beginnings today there are 18 hectares between Barbaresco and Neive in 5 of the best crus such as Cottà, Pajorè, Fausoni, Currà and Basarin where the winery’s philosophy has remained the same in environmental conservation without the use of chemicals but natural so as not to alter the balance of each hill. The approach in the cellar is a mixture of traditional and modern with spontaneous vinification, long extractions in macerations and aging in wood of a minimum of 12 months with the use of small or large barrels depending on the label. These are wines that reflect the terroir those made by Rino and his sons, unfortunately very limited quantities but inside each bottle there is the same thing: a lot of passion.
