Scarpa – Barbera d’Asti I Bricchi – 2018

Barbera “I Bricchi” comes from the vineyard of the same name located between Castel Rocchero and Acqui Terme, exposed between south and southwest with soils rich in clay and sand, giving the wines more acidity and flavor. The wine in this case was aged for 2 years in large oak barrels and then aged in the bottle. This Barbera represents Scarpa’s second in importance and complexity, giving precisely the same attention and care in the winemaking and in the choice of time and wood for aging. A wine with a considerable aging capacity of about 10 to 20 years, it has more delicate aromas and more pronounced freshness without lacking structure.

Description

One of the wineries with the most history and quality in Piedmont. We are in Nizza Monferrato, the absolute best area for Barbera production, and it was here that Cantina Scarpa was founded in 1854 by the Venetian migrant Antonio Scarpa. Thanks to winemaker Mario Pesce, who took over the winery in the 1940s, a marked improvement in wines and style was seen. The winery’s technique despite its 100-year history is still the same: macerations and long aging in only exclusively large oak barrels and in bottles. But the main point that has made this winery famous is the importance they give to grape varieties relatively considered easier to drink such as Ruché and Barbera, managing to achieve great results but above all wines that can age even for 20 years! ( which is truly unique and rare, given that they are fresh wines to drink in their early years). In addition to being famous for Barbera such as the legendary “Bogliona” where it performs a long aging of 4 years, the winery also produces Barolo and Barbaresco: coming from very old vineyards and aged also in this case in large wooden barrels for a long time, without following the precise rules of the disciplinary, but only following the natural times of the wine, just to enhance the different microclimates conceiving wines of great structure able to evolve well over time even for 50 years.
This winery expresses the true essence of great Piedmontese wines. Here you can breathe true old school!!!
