Ruinart – Champagne Millesime Brut – 2016

If you want to get to know and taste a rare part of Ruinart’s essence right away, you cannot miss its Millesime, a Champagne decidedly superior to others with a capital “R” in which the Maison’s clear message is projected: Savoir-Faire. That’s right, the exact knowledge of how to assemble and create a bubbly down to the smallest details of the vintage where Chardonnay forms the backbone of the cuvée, Grands and Premiers Cru vineyards between the Montagne de Reims and the Cote de Blancs on mainly chalky terroirs. Separate fermentations of the grapes in steel tanks including malolactic so as to round out the base acidity, after which comes the turn of the Chef de Cave who decides on the final blend each time after numerous tastings before bottle aging at least 5 years. The Millesimo 2016 was climatically challenging but yielded mind-blowing results in terms of aromaticity and complexity, composed of 48% Chardonnay, 32% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier from the dosage of 5 g/l it presents hints of exotic fruit and cereals with iodine notes as it oxidizes, on the palate it proves eclectic and enveloping with good minerality and final persistence highlighting its shining rigor. A simple sip is enough to be electrocuted by such sensations.

Ingenuity and splendor, some of the adjectives with which the history of Ruinart can be summed up, a name that has entered the wine world by right and that today resonates more than ever in glasses during toasts for great occasions. It is the oldest Maison founded in Champagne dating back to September 1, 1729 when Nicolas Ruinart near Reims opened the first bookkeeping register inherent to wines, belonging to a family of merchants he took strong inspiration from his uncle Dom Thierry Ruinart at the time a trusted collaborator of Dom Perignon and a pioneer in the production of the famous sparkling wine. This new fashion that was conquering all of Europe became an opportunity to create the unimaginable, a dynasty of excellent producers who helped raise status to the heights of prestige by purchasing land, expanding markets and perfecting winemaking techniques. We are talking about estates divided between Reims and the Cote de Blancs in some of the most beautiful vineyards in the region where Chardonnay is the absolute emblem along with Pinot Noir that are worked according to natural principles of a Know-how handed down for generations from which specific labels will be produced. Catalogued parcels where the best grapes are selected, use of steel tanks for all vinification with successive blends created by the Chefs de Cave based on tastings, stays in the bottle from 3 to 10 years practicing periodic millimeter remuage inside the famous Crayeres dug into the chalk 40 meters deep where they have been stored since 1768 in perfect temperature. 300 years have passed and yet the spirit of this legendary First Cellar continues to live on through its bubbles without sparing time or novelty.
