Pol Roger – Champagne Sir Wiston Churchill – 2015
The most prestigious cuvée of the Maison and among those in Champagne, a bubbly first produced in 1975 dedicated to British Prime Minister Winston Churchill who was always a great admirer of Pol Roger wines and promoted the brand in his own country, calling it suitable for English tastes. A blend where Pinot Noir dominates along with a small portion of Chardonnay in a blend secretly guarded by the family made from the oldest vines, some even dating back to Churchill’s own time. Each step is millimetric, several pressings to capture only the best of the berries, each vinification separated in temperature-controlled steel tanks where malolactic fermentation also takes place before aging on the lees for at least 7 years. A wine of intriguing robustness of taste and ample olfactory complexity, the scents are multiple from spicy to dried fruit to jam but the real impact is felt on the palate where there is structure and depth, enveloping acidity and excellent final persistence. For the true Gentleman!

Description
For 170 years the Champagne Maison Pol Roger has been one of the most famous and renowned in history. Founded in Ay in the mid-1800s by Pol the son of a notary public who demonstrated considerable skill in wine making, he produced his first label in 1849 but it was in 1851 that he moved to Epernay, the capital of Champagne. By the turn of the century the Maison’s wines were among the best known and most coveted on the market, despite an unfortunate structural accident that happened to the winery in the early 1900s and later the political-economic crisis caused by the world wars, the prestige and quality of the name has never been in question so much so that it was especially appreciated by the British court and its Prime Minister Winston Churchill, to whom one of the most prized cuvées was dedicated in 1975. The three classic varieties Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay are grown, distributed mainly in the Cote de Blancs, Marne Valley and Montagne de Reims with Premier and Grand Cru plots where the best grapes are harvested. The winery’s philosophy that later made it so famous in the world was to create Champagne of great class, in a few bottles by introducing malolactic fermentation in the wines in the process, long aging on the lees using mainly Brut dosage…
Thus creating wines that are harmonious, round, crisp and very drinkable, but prestigious at the same time where all the Savoir-faire is perceived. Nowadays the Maison, after two centuries of history has remained one of the few wineries still in the hands of the same family and following the same traditional production philosophy, which makes it not only fascinating but historically rare.
