Passopisciaro – Franchetti Terre Siciliane – 2019
A flagship bottle for the winery, by now an affirmation of Andrea Franchetti’s minimalist philosophy which was able to conquer the enological world in an unprecedented way. An imperious blend of Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’Affile which varies in percentage each vintage according to the year but always gives the same gustatory mark. Vineyards are located in Contrada Guardiola, rich in rock and ash, where each plant produces only 5 buds from which the best grapes are selected and fermented in steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation and aging done in new French oak barriques for 4 months, plus 14 months in cement tanks and large oak casks. An excellent year, 2019, which produced a dark, volcanic-colored wine with heady fruit aromas accompanied by structure and strength, contagious to drink thanks to a generous freshness. An authentic explosive jewel!

Description
“Advantages and oddities, this is Etna, a virgin place governed by nameless forces” this is how we could describe a true natural viticultural masterpiece as seen through the eyes of Andrea Franchetti. Illustrious and visionary oenologist, former owner of Tenuta di Trinoro in Tuscany, after a journey in Sicily fascinated by its richness decided to restore an ancient baglio in the northern side of the volcano. The winery is located above the locality of PassoPisciaro in the commune of Castiglione di Sicilia at the beginning of 2000, where he planted and restored ancient abandoned vineyards of Nerello Mascalese (some of which are centenarian) together with other allochthonous varieties such as Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Cesanese d’affile.
Little known, Etna is characterized by altitude and climate, that is low temperatures and Mediterranean influence, in its different slopes made of fertile and drained soils, rich in minerals which give expressiveness to the grapes due to the excellent temperature range. He was the first to understand the historical subdivision of the volcano in natural micro-zones introducing the declination of “Contrade”, that is parcels located at different heights and sun exposures, formed by various layers of lava flows in which specific microclimates are in force. There are 28 hectares of property between 500 and 1000 meters above sea level which extend over 5 districts (Rampante, Sciaranuova, Guardiola, Porcaria and Chiappemacine) immersed in an untamed and preserved nature from which wines are obtained which exalt their different specificities according to the type. Neither a current nor a style of wine making is followed, there is nothing predefined if not the course of seasons where each wine is the result of quality researched in selections and aging by using naturist methods and ideas. Despite it is still mysterious to the enology, this territory has soon conquered the real connoisseurs making Franchetti a real beacon for the Etna’s wine rebirth in the world.
