Molitor Rosenkreuz – Riesling Trocken – 2018

The winery’s entry wine but one that actually turns out to be a true revelation, in fact this Riesling is made from the youngest vines of the Grand Cru Wintrich Ohlisgberg known for centuries to be one of the highest expressions of this grape. The grapes are harvested by hand on steep slopes where the best bunches are selected on site, fermented in steel tanks with indigenous yeasts and remain in contact with the fine lees several months before resting in the bottle as many years. A superlative bottle full of typical aromatic scents with that ever-present touch of hydrocarbon, in the mouth it is forthright and mineral but with a fresh and powerful finish. Sometimes appearances can be deceiving.

Among the hills of the Mosel, Germany’s memorable wine-growing region and home par excellence of Riesling, lies the small Molitor Rosenkreuz winery, which has been in business for no less than 200 years. Precisely we are between Minheim and Piesport, for as many as twelve generations the Molitor family has been producing world-class wines where since 1995 the business has been run by Achim Molitor as owner and winemaker. There are 5 hectares distributed among the best plots in the area where Riesling reaches disproportionate levels of quality because of perfect microclimates, vines between 70-100 years old and an unchanged environment. Work is kept to a minimum and in the most ethical way possible to achieve the best, from cluster selection to spontaneous fermentations in steel tanks with long contact on the lees and long bottle aging without filtration and clarification previously. Mentality anchored in the past with an eye to the future with amazing results.
