Le Macchiole – Messorio Toscana Igt – 2016

Considered one of Italy’s finest single-varietal Merlots, Messorio is the winery’s flagship label, created with the desire to demonstrate Bolgheri’s tenacity in crafting a world-class wine. Its first vintage was in 1994, a bastion of Super Tuscans created with innovative cultivation and winemaking techniques that enhance every nuance of grape and terroir. The two vineyards, located on the so-called “Etruscan Coast,” date back to the 1990s and are planted with approximately 8,000–100,000 vines per hectare on two different hillsides with calcareous and clayey soils. Yields per hectare are less than 3.5 quintals, with 900 grams of grapes per plant following careful selection. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks for 30 days to preserve color and optimal extraction. Aging takes place in new barriques, 12-hectare conical barrels, and stoneware amphorae for a total of 16-20 months, depending on the vintage. This red wine’s profile is that of a Tuscan diamond. The bouquet is extremely varied, with notes of cocoa, intense red fruit, and licorice harmonizing seamlessly. The first sip is robust, with evident softness and a very refined and silky tannic texture on the finish. It also boasts impressive structure and incredible longevity, making it a wine to savor even after 10 years.

Description

One of the reasons Bolgheri was founded was that before the advent of Sassicaia, there were families and wineries that had already invested in and recognized that area as unique for producing excellent wines. Le Macchiole is a Status Quo, a pioneer of the appellation, one of the first wineries in Italy to believe in the Bordeaux blend, deciding to focus on international varieties, overturning the traditional mentality. The winery was founded in 1983 in Castagneto Carducci by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli with the purchase of a small, unconventional vineyard. After studying the climate and assessing the soil, they began their first experiments with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and over the years, Cabernet Franc and Syrah were added. Their fame took off after the establishment of the Bolgheri DOC in 1994, creating incredible labels that have won over the market and enthusiasts, such as Messorio and Paleo, two of the most sought-after Super Tuscans. Today, the estate covers 35 hectares, managed with minimalist techniques that have distinguished the quality of its wines. Its organic approach, certified with biodynamic practices since 2010, is based on the vineyard’s varietals, with high-density plantings for yields of less than 45–50 quintals after carefully selected, separate harvests. In the cellar, cement tanks and small oak barrels are used to achieve extraction, structure, and longevity. Every story begins from nothing and in silence, but they are the most beautiful to tell. Le Macchiole is one of the pillars of excellence in the history of Bolgheri.
