Grattamacco – Bolgheri Superiore – 2020
A piece of Bolgheri history is Grattamacco, an authentic SuperTuscan, a Bolgheri giant and the first of its kind to have a higher percentage of Sangiovese in the blend so as to amplify both the wine’s elegant component and its longevity and complexity over the years. Composed of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from high quality 30-year-old vines halfway between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri it turns out to be a pure expression, not only of terroir but of evolutionary potential due both to the limestone and clay soils and to the microclimate given by the sea winds by varying the blend every year to obtain the best result .Fermented in 700-liter truncated-conical wooden vats using indigenous yeasts without a temperature control, maceration on the skins continues for 3 weeks with periodic manual punching down so as to have color and extraction before aging in French barriques for 18 months followed by an additional 12 months in the bottle. A well known wine since its first vintage in 1982, it has all the attributes to be superlative in the future, with a complex aromatic profile of red fruit and Mediterranean spices well connected to the palate that releases strength and persistence, possesses excellent body and structure, rough tannins assisted by juicy acidity. To be forgotten in the cellar!

Description
Despite its late birth and fame, the Bolgheri DOC has had such an unstoppable rise over the years as to place it among the world’s most visited winemaking realities thanks to incredible wines and wineries that have enhanced the so-called Italian Bordeaux cut. One of these pillars is Grattamacco. Founded in 1977 by Piermario Cavallari on the top of a hill between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri, this ancient estate derives from the name Macco by which iron mines were identified in Etruscan times where the material was extracted by scratching the rock, an area however that is a short distance from the sea at around 100 meters above sea level presenting soils rich in minerals. A small entity of 12 hectares that represents the second for historicity of the appellation and produced its first label in 1982 growing the main varieties of the area such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot as well as the ever-present Sangiovese sensing the potential of blending to give identity and longevity to future wines. Vineyards divided into two large hilly areas that enjoy a perfect mild microclimate conducted in an organic regime establishing harmony with the surrounding ecosystem and harvesting depending on the variety maximum 50-60 quintals per hectare. In the winery, work is carried out unaltered as in the early days, maceration in wooden vats with subsequent spontaneous fermentation and use of French oak barrels in aging. Since 2002 this splendid estate has become part of Claudio Tipa’s ColleMassari winemaking group, which manages every aspect of it, continuing another fascinating and compelling challenge in Tuscany.
