Gaja – Alteni di Brassica – 2017
Gaja family settled in Piedmont in the middle of the seventeenth century, five generations have alternated since Giovanni Gaja founded the winery in Barbaresco, when his son Angelo and his wife Clotilde joined the company, the real production of quality wine began. Since 1937 his son Giovanni made Barbaresco his flagship wine by gaining a leading position in the Italian market, he introduced the philosophy, which the winery still follows today, of bottling only the best vintages and he also increased the vineyards owned by the winery by purchasing the Costa Russi, Sorì Tildin, Sorì San Lorenzo and Darmagi sites, thus consolidating a further improvement of production. The real turning point for the winery was when Angelo Gaja joined the company in 1961 and thanks to his far-sightedness and his spirit of innovation he succeeded in spreading the knowledge of Barbaresco all over the world. In 1972 a trip to America was fundamental for his education, and once back in his Barbaresco he decided to plant chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, in an excellent nebbiolo position, thus conquering international markets. In 1994 the Gaja family bought the Pieve S. Restituita winery in Montalcino and in 1996 they bought a second property in Tuscany, in Bolgheri, where they established Ca’ Marcanda winery. The philosophy of the winery is to contribute with one’s work to the beauty and the health of the environment, the care of vineyards is maniacal and starts with the preservation of the oldest vines, massal selection done on historical vineyards, just like the working of the land, wine making is inspired by the respect of nature and of its times, by traditional wisdom and innovative research.
This wine is the umpteenth demonstration of the greatness of Gaja winery, we can surely define it as one of the highest expressions of Sauvignon in Piedmont! Alteni di Brassica whose name derives from Alteni, small stone walls which once surrounded the vineyards, and Brassica, yellow flowers which cover the vineyards in springtime. Grapes come from Barbaresco and Serralunga, different soils a mix of sand, clay and limestone which give us a wine with a well defined fruit component and to the palate shows a balanced body and a dense structure. Absolutely to be tried!
