Domaine Pierre Amiot et Fils – Morey Saint Denis 1er cru Les Millandes – 2013

Les Millandes is a small parcel located in the village of Morey Saint Denis south of the Grand Cru of Clos Saint Denis, it is considered the most prized of the Premier Cru in the area due to the composition of its soils and exposure similar to the latter. The Amiot family has always owned about 0.5 hectares in this fantastic plot where they grow only Pinot Noir, the vines range in age from 30 to 60 years but the key is the soils where the limestone and clay matrix give wines with good structure. Cold maceration in steel tanks for 7 days in which there are delicate extractions of the components and then alcoholic fermentation for 10 days using indigenous yeasts, after malolactic fermentation there is aging in oak barrels (30% new) for 15-18 months depending on the vintage. The final outcome is as desired that is a wine of predominant aromatic elegance where the hints are of red fruit with balsamic contours, on the palate it proves powerful and nervous with sweet tannins on the finish. Here time could be a good ally for the future.

Description

There are stories and wineries that deserve to be known so as to grasp what it means to make wine in a great region of the world like Burgundy, among them is the domaine Pierre Amiot et fils for 5 generations. Located in the heart of the Cote de Nuits in the village of Morey Saint Denis recognized as one of the most important areas for Pinot Noir, it was founded in 1951 by Pierre Amiot who took over the family estate and its holdings. Focused on making great wines he was helped by his sons Jean Louis and Didier from 1980 taking advantage of the enormous fortune and wealth of the land by introducing high quality methods from the vineyard to the winery from the very beginning, today the two brothers are at the head of the winery personally taking care of every step of production. It is a very small entity of 8 hectares divided between Morey St.Denis and Gevrey Chambertin with 40 total plots where the two important Grand Cru of Clos de la Roche and Charmes Chambertin stand out as well as several plots in 5 Premier Cru and 3 Village, a real territorial wealth where Pinot Noir and a small part of Chardonnay are grown on all of them. The soils are at a maximum altitude between 220 and 260 meters where there is a high limestone component in the soils, good drainage and specific microclimates for the exposures that give the wines extraordinary finesse. Quality is their fixation, natural methods are used respecting nature, their vineyards also reach over 60 years of age obtaining a smaller production per plant but with more concentrated clusters. There are careful selections of grapes according to the type of wine, vinifications follow a modern mold with the use of steel tanks and manual techniques from tradition while aging takes place for at least 15 months in oak barrels of which one part is new. We can say that tasting their wines allows one to get to know a more enterprising version of Burgundy.
