Crissante – Barolo Capalot – 2018

Their most important Barolo is undoubtedly Capalot, a wine produced in just 4000 units from the homonymous part of the hill of La Morra which has always been considered of excellent quality for Nebbiolo in the sense of elegance. Only 0.5 hectares with 70-year-old plants well exposed to the south-east at around 330 metres, the soils of this vineyard are mainly sandy with deep calcareous veins which give the wines an interesting longevity over time. The fermentations take place in steel tanks in contact with the skins for two weeks in which punching down and pumping over are used, the aging instead takes place in large Slavonian barrels for 24 months before resting in the bottle for as many months. Definitely refined right from the start with notes of red fruit and vanilla, it is full on the palate, presenting a discreet structure with noble tannins at the end. Recommended to drink both young and after many years.

Description

Immersed in the Langa since its birth, in the village of La Morra there is the Crissante winery, a small family business that has been carrying on the Piedmontese tradition of great wines for several generations. Those were the years of the “Malora” (as the writer Beppe Fenoglio wrote) or an era of poverty and tragic social condition in the Langhe, despite these adversities small wineries decided not to abandon the lands but to continue the production of wines, one of these examples was Barolo. It was founded in 1958 at the Borgata Roggeri di Santa Maria, the year in which Crissante Alessandria together with his wife decided to stop selling the grapes to the large cellars and start a personal production. They have always had their own vineyards which over the years have increased to 6 hectares, and a turning point came in the 1980s when the separate vinification of the vineyards was decided, increasing the quality standards. At the helm today is Michele Alessandria, a few labels with limited production where the predominant grape is Nebbiolo together with Barbera and Dolcetto in some of the most renowned Crus such as Capalot. Very careful in the vineyard with natural treatments and choice of fully ripe bunches, traditional style in the wines with long vinifications and the use of oak barrels of various sizes in the refinements. We just need to thank the courage and past efforts if today we can tell so many beautiful stories about Barolo.
