Contratto – Metodo Classico Special Cuvée Extra Brut – 2012

A varied selection of labels, drinking a bubbly from Contratto means savoring a part of Italian wine history, one of the reasons why in the Alta Langa appellation they are a true reference point thanks to their expertise in the field. This new chapter of theirs begins after they identified and purchased land near Bossolasco (one of the highest points in the region) where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay because of the altitudes between 750 and 800 meters find a perfect microclimate in which to exalt acidity and aromas also favored by the limestone soils. However, only the finest exposures are destined after careful selection of the clusters for the production of the “Special Cuvée,” this is a unique Millesimato in Piedmont released after 10 years on the market in limited quantities. Composed mainly of Pinot Noir with the addition of Chardonnay is obtained from the oldest plants, a soft pressing is performed to obtain the must flower of both grapes with subsequent fermentation in steel tanks then remaining to refine for 9 months where the Chardonnay makes a passage in wood, finally the stay on the lees is about 90 months with periodic remuage. A bubble of rare beauty, refined in its details, all hints of pastry very intoxicating, on the palate it proves enveloping and mouthwatering releasing excellent flavor and remarkable length on the finish at times unnatural given the area of origin.

Description

Among the prominent names in Italian wine, the Contratto winery represents one of the first foundations of sparkling wine in the history of our country. Absolutely unique and pioneering at the time, unchanged and very impressive to visit to this day, we are talking about 1867 when Giuseppe Contratto founded the historic winery in Canelli dedicating himself exclusively to the production of Metodo Classico bubbles with Moscato grapes, becoming in those years one of the first to do so in Italy along with Gancia in Piedmont. These were the years of the rise, through new techniques they perfected their sparkling wines becoming the first to produce a Millesimato in 1919 exalting the single vintage, their prestige led them to conquer international markets and land in the lives of royal families in Europe as a supplier, also introduced again the production of Vermouth and liqueurs recovering old recipes. They understood the importance of storing bottles in a cool environment at a constant temperature so they decided to build the famous “Cathedral” entirely dug by hand in the hill next to the city consisting of limestone tuff, this structure that since 2014 is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covers 5000 square meters at a depth of 38 meters and has always been the business card of the winery. Changes in ownership over the years were decisive in increasing the Status, first the Bocchino family then the Rivetti family as well as owners of the La Spinetta winery who acquired it in 2011 deciding to buy hectares planted with vines in Alta Langa producing the eponymous bubbly. Philosophy unchanged for over 150 years with non-invasive approaches in the vineyards planted with Muscat, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, in the vinifications they prefer steel tanks and wooden vats with subsequent bottle aging of minimum 36 months with very low dosages. If you want to know the origin of their quality this time you do not need a time machine, walk through the door and it is already a plunge into the past.
