Antoniolo – Gattinara Riserva – 2019

A simpler version of Gattinara with pure Nebbiolo, which, however, does not want to convey detail but a deeper territorial texture-in fact, it was chosen to be produced in Riserva. This label is made from multiple vineyards assembled in excellent exposures and with plants over 20 years old scattered in various areas to enhance the richness of the soil. The grapes are vinified spontaneously in steel tanks for 10-15 days with subsequent aging in large barrels for 30 months and another 10 months in the bottle. One tastes new flavors, different from those of the Langhe even though it is the same grape, intriguing aromas of flowers and red fruit while the palate is elegant, mineral with taut tannins on the finish. A must try!

Description

In northern Piedmont when one mentions Antoniolo, one automatically speaks of Gattinara, a richly fragrant and mineral wine that has taken the leap in the wine scene for the past few decades, a DOCG considered among the most important in the region. A village that identifies an appellation in which Nebbiolo called “Spanna” here reigns supreme, the main grape that has been able to adapt to colder climates from Monte Rosa and granitic soils of volcanic origin. The winery was founded in 1948 with Mario Antoniolo, the first landmark ever, a family of winemakers who did not abandon their land even in the most complicated periods such as the phylloxera crisis and the economic abyss of the world wars, they established a new cycle by arranging and vinifying grapes from old vineyards. A dedication theirs handed down over the decades to the latest generation, from daughter Rossella to grandchildren Alberto and Lorella each of whom brought ideas and desire to make great wines slowly conquering markets. The property has 15 hectares almost all planted with Nebbiolo with some Vespolina and Bonarda distributed in some of the best areas for exposure where the plants range from 40 to 60 years of age. The continuous expression of the vineyard with its peculiarities is sought without being invasive but only respectful, in the processes in the cellar long fermentations with indigenous yeasts and aging in large barrels of more than 20 months before stops in the bottle. Those wonderful small producers who have become a bulwark for their homeland.
