Cascina la Barbatella – Nizza Vigna dell’Angelo Riserva – 2020

One of the reasons the Nizza DOCG region was established in 2016 is due to its unique natural conditions, which yield exceptional results in terms of structure and aging potential. The Riserva is the winery’s most exclusive wine, produced only in exceptional vintages in a limited run of 1,000 bottles, and embodies the true, austere nature of Nizza in accordance with the winery’s philosophy. The grapes come from the nine best-exposed rows of the Vigna dell’Angelo vineyard, which is also home to the oldest vines—95 years old—from which only a few of the ripest and most concentrated clusters are selected. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, while malolactic fermentation occurs in 500-liter French oak tonneaux; the wine is then aged for 30 months before its annual rest in the bottle. This is the most noble and complex Barbera you can drink, magnificent with its dark aromas of red fruit and toasty, earthy notes; on the palate, it is powerful and elegant, with a smoothness and acidity that stand the test of time. The true essence of pleasure.

Description

Cascina La Barbatella is located in Nizza Monferrato in the heart of the Nizza DOCG, considered the best area for Barbera, and is part of that group of wineries that make this vine famous all over the world, producing bottles of absolute excellence every year. A small family business, it was born in 1982 when the first harvest was made, becoming a grape contributor at the beginning, then from 2005 it was bought by Lorenzo Perego and his wife who decided to stop selling and become producers, launching a challenge to the future in a whole new world for them. First years of study of techniques, territory and experimentation with the help of their winemaker establishing continuous improvement goals until 2010 when the entire structure was renovated respecting both a modern and traditional style. Today they manage 3.5 hectares of vineyard with the good fortune of owning very old plants up to 95 years old, taking advantage of a natural amphitheater with optimal altitudes and exposures at most where they grow mainly Barbera and international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. In their vision, there is no predefined calendar but they follow a passion dictated by the land by following the progression of the seasons, the preservation of the environment allows the health of the vineyard treated with natural methods so as to obtain high quality bunches. Low and weighted yields are practiced for each grape variety with summer thinnings, in the winery steel is used in vinification while for aging only barriques and tonneaux are used with a minimum stay of 12 months before bottling leaving at least one year to rest here as well. A fantastic genuine dimension of full appreciation.
