Piero Busso – Langhe Sauvignon – 2024

Among the bold choices made in the early years of the winery was the decision to focus on another white grape variety, one that had already gained fame thanks to Gaja and its renowned Alteni di Brassica: Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyard is located in Neive and covers 1.3 hectares at an altitude of 180 meters, where both the exposure and the limestone marl soils enhance the wine’s minerality and aromatic profile. The grapes are vinified as whole clusters in stainless steel tanks, followed by aging on the lees for several months before an additional six months of bottle aging. Produced in only a few thousand bottles per year, it represents an excellent alternative, offering pronounced vegetal and floral aromas, with a fresh palate and vibrant acidity.

Description

Among the countless stories of the Langhe, there is one that has always fascinated me for its genuine tradition, unchanged for more than 70 years: the winery of Piero Busso, Piedmontese by birth and by nature.
Founded in 1948 in Neive, on the Albesani hill, by Guido Busso, a hardworking and intelligent farmer, the estate stood out from the very beginning thanks to his ability to recognize and enhance the quality of Nebbiolo by identifying the most suitable vineyard sites. The winery was later passed on to his son, Piero, who, following his father’s teachings, decided to produce a Barbaresco that would be a true reflection of its terroir. This vision came to life in 1982, when the first vintage of Albesani was released.
Over the years, specific vineyard parcels were acquired while preserving the estate’s small-scale, family-run identity. Today, the winery covers 10 hectares, including the renowned vineyards of Gallina and San Stunet, with limited annual production. In addition to Nebbiolo, the estate also cultivates Barbera, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Their winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in a natural, low-intervention approach, following a certified organic farming regime. No chemical substances are used, preserving the authentic bond between the wines and their territory. Yields are kept deliberately low, and cellar work remains traditional, with minimal reliance on technology. Long macerations and aging in large oak casks are essential elements of the process, and none of the wines are filtered, allowing them to express their purest and most essential character. Still managed entirely by the family today, the winery continues to honor its heritage. Once a small producer, Piero Busso has now become one of the great names of Barbaresco. This is Piero Busso.
