Rocche dei Manzoni – Langhe Chardonnay L’Angelica – 2023
If you’re looking for some French-style white wines from the Langhe that are superb, well-known, yet more affordable, Rocche dei Manzoni’s Angelica remains an excellent choice. Following the great success of their sparkling wines and their successful venture into Chardonnay, they decided to produce a white wine for the first time in 1989, following the so-called “modernist trend” that was gaining traction in the region. This was no random choice, nor was it a novelty; the idea was to use a portion of the vineyard in Monforte to take advantage of the higher elevations and clay soils, thereby achieving greater structure and longevity. With controlled yields of 60 quintals, vinification takes place in barriques, including malolactic fermentation, followed by 18 months of aging in French oak (50% new) plus an additional 12 months in concrete. The elegance of the wood is the first impression upon tasting; the aromas are a blend of banana and toasted notes, while the creaminess and fullness reflect the winery’s style, with acidity and opulence perfectly balanced in a thoroughly enjoyable wine.

Description
Rocche dei Manzoni is a dynamic winery that has always been at the forefront of innovation, located in Monforte in the Langa region. It was founded by Valentino Migliorini, who arrived in the Langa in the 1970s and purchased a farmhouse in Monforte d’Alba, right in the heart of the Barolo production area. He was a rather innovative figure; he was the first to produce classic method sparkling wines using the same grapes as Champagne in a land of reds and Nebbiolo, and he was the first to bring in and use French barriques for aging wines. Over the years, he managed to cultivate 50 hectares, all located in the municipality of Monforte and divided among the best vineyards with the best exposures. From celebrated sparkling wines like the Riserva Elena and the Brut Zero to Barolos that are so full-bodied and smooth, the wines of the Rocche dei Manzoni winery have contributed to the renaissance of Langa wines, particularly in terms of quality.
