Domaine Des Lambrays – Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Du Cailleret – 2017
Puligny-Montrachet is the capital of the world’s finest Chardonnays, an area with an enormously complex terroir, with parcels of land classified as Premier and Grand Cru, shared by historic families and memorable producers. The “Clos du Cailleret” is a Premier Cru parcel located in the main block, adjacent to Montrachet, which is said to be its natural extension, with a different exposure but almost the same climate. The Lambrays winery owns 0.37 hectares of it, purchased in 1993. Annual production is 1,500 bottles, and the clay-rich soil with pebbles gives the wines an uncommon persistence. Yields are low for a vineyard over 40 years old. Fermentation takes place in steel tanks, followed by aging in oak barrels for 9-10 months (50% new). The notes of elegance are amplified by the complexity, hints of fruit and honey with buttery contours and on the palate acidity and body that play in perfect harmony, giving fullness, softness and a not indifferent touch of class.

Description
Clos des Lambrays is one of the legends of French wine. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a long and fragmented history, it, along with Romanée-Conti, produces one of the world’s finest Pinot Noirs. Its foundation dates back to 1365 in the village of Morey Saint-Denis, in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, when the area was demarcated by laying the first stone of the walls (Clos) by the monks of Citeaux Abbey. A troubled history that saw many owners over the centuries mismanage the property without ever seriously producing wine, until 1979, when Thierry Brouin effectively brought about a turning point after renovating the vineyard and producing the first new vintages. It was a great effort that earned it the Grand Cru designation in 1981, a title it has always held since, and its prestige finally grew so much that in 2014 it was purchased by the luxury group Louis Vuitton. Today, Domaine des Lambrays embodies the authentic expression of Burgundy, drawing on the savoir-faire that distinguishes it in the valorization of its innately high-quality soils (climates). For example, the Clos des Lambrays itself, an 8.84-hectare vineyard planted exclusively with Pinot Noir, divided into three sections based on exposure and altitude: Les Larrets, Les Bouchots, and Les Meix-Rentier, produces a wine with an irreplaceable identity. Beyond the estate, other top-tier vineyards have been acquired, where Chardonnay dominates at Puligny-Montrachet, Les Folatières, and Clos du Cailleret, two Premier Crus that yield wines of unique finesse and longevity. For decades, the estate has pursued a style that reflects the terroir, from spontaneous vinification to the use of small, not-too-new oak barrels for 10-12 months. Taste one of their wines and you will understand why they call it the “Jewel of Burgundy”.
