Poderi Aldo Conterno – Barolo Bussia Cicala – 2019

In the history of Barolo, the Bussia area has always been a favorite for the great wines of Monforte d’Alba, a very large area that has been uncovered over the years but has shown a multiplicity of expression unique to the appellation. Within it there are several subzones that were identified after careful observations especially regarding altitude and exposure, one of which is the Cicala vineyard, a portion of the hillside wholly owned where there is a strong presence of clay. The vines are more than 40 years old, where only manual work of maximum selection applies, fermentations take place for 30 days in steel tanks while the subsequent aging is done in traditional small barrels for about 30 months. A wine that expresses strong hints of complexity between leather and ripe fruit, on the palate it is forthright with a good entry from the beautiful acidity and witty tannin but without being exaggerated showing excellent balance and evolution for the future. Hang in there 10 years and then it will be all emotion!

Description

In the archives of Piedmont wine history, some wineries are carved in stone, difficult beginnings and pasts but with a glorious epilogue. Aldo Conterno is one of those leading names in Langa…one of those that made Barolo history, a family of high rank that you place as a reference for the innate quality it has always demonstrated. The winery was born in Monforte d’Alba in the hamlet of Bussia thanks to Aldo, brother of the famous Giacomo Conterno, always attracted to the world of wine as well as helping his father Giovanni during the grape harvests, he decided it was time to grow and cultivate his passion outside the borders. After a long winemaking experience in California from an old uncle, he decided to return home ti start making wines in the family’s historic estate, despite this Aldo was ambitious and had his own idea of wine… that was how he bought the Favot Estate in 1969. A succession of successes with the purchase of excellent vineyards over the years totaling 25 hectares in some of the most historic areas such as Romirasco, Cicala and Colonnello always considered the best in the Bussia vineyard. A traditional philosophy in the works where the yields are low allowing them to produce 90000 bottles annually without compromises other than making high quality wines including Bussiador, a great Chardonnay vinified in wood that has become a symbolic wine as one of the first international whites produced from a land like the Langhe, and GranBussia that is a Barolo produced in the spectacular vintages assembling the best of the 3 main vineyards. A style in the respect of Nebbiolo and its land of origin carried on today by the new generation with the same quality standard, long macerations and the use of mainly small barrels in aging to obtain a Barolo always full-bodied, with dusty and austere tannins. The Conterno family has simply become a legend!
