Mario Marengo – Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore – 2023

Just 20 km from the Langhe of Barolo lies Roero, a renowned wine area for its whites and fragrant Nebbiolo wines almost reminiscent of the Black Pine. This is where Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore comes from! Qualitatively speaking, Valmaggiore is the best vineyard thanks to the very steep slopes where it is practically impossible to use mechanical means and for the white soils rich in fossils and minerals, giving Nebbiolo with heady scents, silky tannins and great longevity. Thanks to Marco’s wife, who is of Roero origin, the Marengo family produces a few thousand bottles of Valmaggiore, bringing up the name of Nebbiolo not only from Langa but also from Roero. The wine is aged for almost a year in small wooden barrels as well as in the bottle, but even in this case Marco has been able to interpret this type of vineyard very well, creating a perfectly balanced wine, fresh, persistent, fragrant but not banal. Icon!

Description

Mario Marengo is one of the most genuine wineries of the Langa wine scene. The winery is located in the commune of La Morra where it has very solid roots, in fact it was established in 1899, but only thanks to Mario and then today to his son Marco there was a qualitative leap in the approach in the vineyard and in the wines. The Marengo family manages 8 hectares of vineyards located in La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Barolo and Vezza d’Alba.
They prefer a clean cultivation in the vineyard, using manure as fertilizers and organic products, the main goal is not to damage the soil at all in order to try to extract the best from every micro-terroir that each small plot can give.
Wines made to perfection from Barbera to Baroli, thanks to Marco’s maniacal care, especially in the use of wooden barrels for aging! He absolutely prefers the use of new barrique, but well used, the wines must not taste of wood, but exalt the fruit and the soil. Few bottles for each wine, but made with a great hand and technique. I am sure of one thing, the Marengo family knows how to do its job.
