Bruno Giacosa – Barolo Falletto Vigna Le Rocche Riserva – 2016
A single and unique property, the Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba is one of the rare examples of a monopoly in the Barolo appellation, managed entirely by the Giacosa winery. This was in 1982 when it was bought by Bruno, which he has always recognized as an ideal and prestigious area to produce his Barolo thanks to the very calcareous and marly soils at an altitude of 400 meters. In particular as a good connoisseur of the area, he identified a parcel with more rocky soils and perfect exposure between south and southwest where the plants were older and the grapes show a different quality for the wines. This sub-area called “Le Rocche” is ONLY produced in precise vintages in very limited quantities as a Riserva version with the sole intent of extrapolating the spirit of the Langhe through Barolo over time. Every step is millimetric, precise harvesting with manic selection of grapes, fermentation and maceration with indigenous yeasts from slow extraction in cement tanks for 30 days with subsequent aging in large barrels for 36 months. A world-class emblem and among the most desirable bottles in the wine world, a true guarantee, the aromas are magnificent and complex from dog rose to tobacco and spice, on the palate it proves amazing and indelible with unparalleled depth, power and tannic texture with Olympian finesse. If one speaks of the Bruno Giacosa winery, one mentions one of the highest realities for quality excellence in the Langa, so much so that it is the world standard-bearer for Barbaresco and Barolo wines. Bruno’s story is very simple and is connected to a particular moment in Italian history, where the crisis and world wars greatly affected the economy of the peasantry. Born in Neive in 1929, the son of farmers and bottlers, he began his path in the world of wine thanks to his father’s teachings, going around the Langa selecting the best grapes. Thanks to this Bruno learned to understand the importance of the exposures of Nebbiolo vineyards and to recognize good grapes from bad ones, so much so that he began making wine for himself a few bottles, which immediately became critically acclaimed for the cleanliness and high quality of the wines. It was only in the 1980s that Bruno bought the first “Falletto” vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba for the production of Barolo; before that, the production of the wines was tied to the purchase of grapes through conferters. Instead, we speak of 1998 for the purchase of the “Asili” vineyard in Barbaresco. His idea was always very clear for the production of wines, so much so that he had such a uniquely defined style that it is still clearly perceptible today: maximum cleanliness, no chemical products in the vineyard, vinification with indigenous yeasts, large woods for aging. Bruno Giacosa taught and gave so much to the Langa wine world first and in the world later thanks to his extreme elegance, longevity, cleanliness and humility.
