Chandon de Briailles – Pernand Vergelesses Premier Cru Île des Vergelesses – 2019

Interesting expression of Pinot Noir to highlight how the Pernand Vergelesses area is fabulous for this variety thanks to the climate, the altitude and the geological complexity of some areas, giving wines with good longevity. We are located at the Premier Cru of Ile de Vergelesses next to the Corton hill, considered the best vineyard for red wines with an altitude of up to 289 meters with steep slopes, the soils are clayey and calcareous where their plants have an average 40 years old. The grapes are harvested manually, whole bunches are vinified spontaneously in open tanks for several days with the aid of punching down and pumping over, aging is done in barriques for 18-24 months and bottled with little addition of sulfur dioxide. An ingenious interpretation has come out of this label, starting from the notes of fruit and spice that alternate announcing a power drink with rough tannins and an imposing structure, it is certainly recommended to open after at least 5 years.

Description

Burgundy turns out to be the homeland of great whites and reds, especially in the Cote d’Or, the area where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay draw their maximum world expression, the area where the most prestigious Crus reside with different results from parcel by parcel. The Chandon de Briailles company has been located in Savigny lès Beaune, in the Côte de Beaune since 1834, bears the name of the countess who founded the Domaine, in turn related to the Moet et Chandon family, who decided to start the cultivation of the vine in their possessions. Eight generations followed in the decades until 1982 when the descendant Nadine de Nicolay took the lead and bottled for the first time and made a drastic change in the treatment of the land by abandoning the use of chemicals. Since 2001 the company has been managed by his sons Claude and Francois de Nicolay (the first ran a wine laboratory and the second a wine shop in Paris) but the latter after a meeting with the Leflaive family understood the importance of working in biodynamics to maintain a vineyard and obtain a healthy wine with the original characteristics. The entire philosophy is founded on maximum environmental respect with multiple certifications, an imprint that has enhanced their most renowned Premier and Grand Cru parcels (Les Lavieres, Clos du Roi, Maréchaudes) distributed in some famous AOCs such as Pernand-Vergelesses, Aloxe -Corton and Savigny les Beaune for a total of 13.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vines. Precise in the work in the vineyards with only towed horses, parcel harvests scheduled for different climatic conditions and meticulous selection of the bunches, in the cellar we prefer wooden tanks with controlled spontaneous fermentation using the whole bunch, the refinements carried out in small barrels and the absence of filtration and clarification before bottling. Great example in the world of Vin naturelle.
