Giacomo Conterno – Barolo Riserva Monfortino – 2013
The Nebbiolo par excellence considered the king of all Barolo, born in 1934 and embodying the perfection of what a Barolo should be: Austerity, structure and longevity. The name “Monfortino” comes from the place of origin of the winery and of the grapes used, at first coming from different contributors then with the purchase of the entire Cru di Francia in Serralunga d’Alba in 1974 only estate grapes were used. This wine than once was, is produced only in vintages deemed spectacular by the winery and exclusively in the Riserva version remaining the one that best suits a Barolo of this caliber where each vintage is decided if the conditions are right for it. The best grapes are selected ( ⅓ of the whole vineyard) which ferment in 61-hectoliter oak vats and carry out long macerations also with the help of submerged cap, after malolactic fermentation the wine is aged in large Austrian oak barrels for 6 years before being bottled. In a nutshell what is in the glass is the apotheosis of ecstasy for lovers of this grape, drink now or wait to drink becomes a real dilemma, clean nose of underbrush and spice notes of manifold kinds, the sip is epic and powerful in which the individual details of the terroir of origin are perceived, dense and persistent tannins for an interminable finish. A desire of any enthusiast, it is no coincidence that it was the most expensive Barolo ever sold at auction retaining this title to date. Legendary and unparalleled!

When one speaks of the Giacomo Conterno winery one refers to one of the most relevant centers of gravity in the Langhe, a legendary Italian beacon in Barolo production and a global exponent of quality in wines. It was 1900 when the winery was founded by Giacomo Conterno in Monforte d’Alba, he already the son of renowned winemakers had the path laid out followed by his son Giovanni who went down in history for being the first to bottle Barolo from 1912 for the trade, previously sold almost in demijohns or barrels. The historic turning point came in 1934 when the famous Barolo Monfortino was first produced by his son Giacomo, creating what would become an icon and also deciding to expand the family horizons by purchasing the Francia vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba in 1974. Since 1988 at the helm is Roberto Conterno, the last descendant and oenological mind who personally leads every movement of the winery, buys over the years a few hectares in the Cerretta and Arione vineyards also in Serralunga, conquers markets and consolidates the Conterno brand worldwide. Today they own 14 hectares planted with Nebbiolo and Barbera vines where they continue the Langhe traditions, natural treatments in the vineyard with thinning, stripping and harvests calculated in parallel with the course of nature itself while the work in the cellar is meticulous where they use Austrian barrels in the ageing process.
