Günther Steinmetz – Pinot Noir Kestener Herrenberg – 2017
An intriguing Pinot Noir in a land of white wines, however atypical this wine is a demonstration of how terroir can express different sensations in terms of sensory purity. Produced from the oldest vines for this variety, planted in the Kesten area within the Kestener Herrenberg vineyard where in addition to good exposure you have blue shale soils for wines of high complexity. The grapes are selected and vinified in steel tanks where they also complete malolactic fermentation while aging continues in oak barrels for at least 12 months, specially unfiltered in this circumstance before bottling. A wine that retains its primordiality in which one perceives a very broad and austere aromatic spectrum, vegetal notes along with hints of red fruit, on the palate it remains delicate with silky tannins and dark acidity however on the whole it is difficult to understand right away portending a few years of waiting to have more maturity.

Description
When one mentions Germany in enology, the first thing that comes to mind is Riesling and Mosel, a unique natural ecosystem formed by steep-sloping hills, cold climates and conditioned by the Mosel River where a wine landscape steeped in centuries of history and castles unfolds. The Gunther Steinmetz winery was founded in 1930 in Brauneberg, began its activities from the 1950s when Gunther progenitor of the family decided to produce the first bottles after generations. The goal all along was to follow a natural path, without the use of exogenous products, relying only in the course of the seasons, maniacal parceling and purchase of important vineyards (some with 100-year-old vines) so as to achieve territorial quality. A concept of terroir expanded to the highest levels by his son Stefan who took over in 1999, there are 13 Ha divided into 60 parcels each with minimal peculiarities (94% require only manual work!) differentiating according to harder or crumblier soils the work in the cellar. Thanks to these foresights today the winery can count vineyards in some of the most prestigious crus ever such as Brauneberg Juffer, Wehlen Sonnenuhr or Ohligsberg where Riesling above all, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay are grown. Based on the typical late and different ripening of the grapes there has been improved Know-how in winemaking, long spontaneous fermentations using indigenous yeasts and carrying out malolactic fermentation, use of steel tanks for simpler and more immediate wines, use of barrels for more austere and complex wines, pauses in the bottle for as long as deemed necessary. It can be said that what enchants and embodies this winery is not only tradition mixed with the values of yesteryear that have remained unchanged, but above all transmitting in their wines “the fingerprint” of the various zones in the full concept of Essence.
