Royal Tokaji – 6 Puttonyos Aszù – 2013

The ancient history of Tokaji and Aszù wines was preserved only by a very small group of people. Among them Johnson met Istvan Szepsy, who, despite he was forced to give almost all of his production to the cooperative, he succeeded in keeping a small quantity of wines produced with traditional methods which amazed the critic so much that he wanted to invest in a joint venture with the Hungarian producer. Royal Tokaji Wine Company, established in Hungary in 1990, has become one of the most important wineries in Tokaj. They were pioneers in the region when it came to producing single vineyard wines. Today they are recognized among the region’s top winemakers, combining traditional techniques with modern technology to create wines of great character and super terroir. Royal Tokaji is the acknowledged leader in the revival of this legendary Hungarian wine, which, in the words of winemaker and winery co-founder Hugh Johnson, is “a wine that would make angels sing out loud.”
Royal Tokaji was inspired and founded by Hugh Johnson, the renowned author and wine historian, whose goal was to revive and bring back to international fame the wines of one of the most renowned wine regions in history.
Royal Tokaji wines have won over 100 international awards and continue to captivate wine lovers around the world.

History reports as the noble Tokaji Aszu, was the first wine intentionally made with dried grapes maybe two centuries before Sauternes. The conditions that cause the grapes to dry and the intense concentration of sugar, acid and flavor are endemic to the region. Each grape affected by Botrytis is harvested by hand and put in “puttonyos”, the traditional containers which contain a maximum of 25 kg of grapes. The grapes are subsequently blended with a still wine. This process gives the wine more body, acidity and richness. The number of puttonyos which are added to a 130 liters cask creates different levels of richness and sweetness in the wine. The more puttonyos are added to the wine, the higher its concentration, aromatic complexity and richness will be. This wine 5 puttonyos whose grapes of Fumint, Hárslevelű and Muscat de Lunel. come from a single vineyard, Nyulászó, in the municipality of Mad. A rich, intense Tokaji with classic fruity notes and a sweet but perfectly balanced finish.
