Luigi Pira – Barolo Vignarionda – 2012 – MG

The Pira Luigi winery is located in Serralunga d’Alba, an area renowned for the power of the Barolos.
Until the 1990s, the family sold grapes, but things changed with the arrival of Luigi’s son, Giampaolo. He decided to produce great wines, but above all Baroli, thanks also to the potential of his own vineyards, considered among the most famous in the whole Langa … such as the renowned Vignarionda, Marenca and Margheria.
His Barolos are tough, hard, spicy and above all tannic! This is thanks to the rocky limestone soils of the Serralunga area. He tries to make clean and representative wines, precisely to enhance each specific characteristic that each vineyard gives.
His Barolo Vignarionda comes from the vineyard of the same name located in the municipality of Serralunga, which has always been considered one of the best ever. The soil in this parcel is rich in blue marl and rock, very hard soils, so as to give the nebbioli an unparalleled structure and tannins. Vignarionda has an absurd aging potential … even if already aged Barolo always looks young. Pira owns only one hectare of this vineyard, and produces 4000 bottles. The wine ages for 24 months in barriques and large barrels and 2 years in the bottle. It is a majestic, powerful wine.
