For the past few years, a breath of fresh air has been sweeping through the Langhe\u2014a wave of innovation and new ideas, with young producers putting themselves to the test and carving out their own niche among the greats with bottles of exceptional quality. The Maffrei winery was founded in La Morra in 2021 by brothers Andrea and Stefano Mascarello, two young men who grew up in the world of wine thanks to their family\u2014the historic founders of the Michele Mascarello winery\u2014but who were determined to forge their own independent path. Without forgetting their roots, they have established their identity as avant-garde winemakers, producing wines that reflect their terroir while adopting an approach that speaks an international language. As advocates of Nebbiolo, they inherited vineyards in La Morra, primarily in the Serradenari and Torriglione areas, where they also cultivate Dolcetto, Pelaverga, and Chardonnay, with annual production totaling around 10,000 bottles. They manage less than 4 hectares, tended with care, and in the cellar, winemaking follows traditional methods with excellent use of oak for aging. A dream come true. The first vintage of Barolo after a long wait of many years\u2014yet it has always been the primary goal of the Maffrei winery. For the 2022 vintage, the ideal cru for producing this wine was chosen from the very beginning: the Torriglione vineyard in La Morra, located at an elevation of around 300 meters, with predominantly clay soils. This was no coincidence, as this parcel is situated at a good altitude on the hillside, enjoying an ideal microclimate for ripening, and has also been considered an excellent area for grape quality\u2014so much so that it was used in the past by Roberto Voerzio in the production of his Riserva wines. Hand-harvesting allowed for greater selection, resulting in a production of just 2,580 bottles. Fermentation took place in wooden vats with a 20-day maceration period, followed by aging in second-use 500-liter French tonneaux for 24 months. A wine waiting to be discovered, either now or with time. The aromas are rich with fruity and spicy notes; on the palate, it is immediate and vertical, with a great initial impact, where the silky, pleasant tannins are nicely balanced by the acidity, which maintains the structure and sets the stage for an interesting evolution.
