Among the countless stories of the Langhe, there is one that has always fascinated me for its genuine tradition, unchanged for more than 70 years: the winery of Piero Busso, Piedmontese by birth and by nature.
\nFounded in 1948 in Neive, on the Albesani hill, by Guido Busso, a hardworking and intelligent farmer, the estate stood out from the very beginning thanks to his ability to recognize and enhance the quality of Nebbiolo by identifying the most suitable vineyard sites. The winery was later passed on to his son, Piero, who, following his father\u2019s teachings, decided to produce a Barbaresco that would be a true reflection of its terroir. This vision came to life in 1982, when the first vintage of Albesani was released.
\nOver the years, specific vineyard parcels were acquired while preserving the estate\u2019s small-scale, family-run identity. Today, the winery covers 10 hectares, including the renowned vineyards of Gallina and San Stunet, with limited annual production. In addition to Nebbiolo, the estate also cultivates Barbera, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.
\nTheir winemaking philosophy is deeply rooted in a natural, low-intervention approach, following a certified organic farming regime. No chemical substances are used, preserving the authentic bond between the wines and their territory. Yields are kept deliberately low, and cellar work remains traditional, with minimal reliance on technology. Long macerations and aging in large oak casks are essential elements of the process, and none of the wines are filtered, allowing them to express their purest and most essential character. Barbaresco Gallina is another remarkable label produced by the Piero Busso winery. The Gallina vineyard is among the most interesting sites in the Neive area. Although located on the opposite slope of Albesani, it benefits from soils with less silt and greater amounts of sand and limestone, giving Nebbiolo both elegance and sweetness, along with more pronounced freshness and tighter tannins. The winery owns vines ranging from 25 to 50 years of age, covering a total of 1.5 hectares.
