Virna – Barolo Sarmassa – 2017

The Sarmassa vineyard, from where Virna produces about 3000 bottles of Barolo, comes from the town of Barolo. This vineyard can be divided into different ridges according to the exposure and how much heat the plants enjoy, giving the wines different characteristics and structure. With medium texture soils rich in clay and sand, the vineyard is located in south-west, a slightly warmer exposure where wines here tend to have more body. The yields in the vineyard are very low, about 50/60 quintals per hectare, just to enhance the pulp and the quality of the wine. The wine has been aged in tonneaux and large casks for 18 months, the minimum required by the disciplinary, plus some months in steel tanks and subsequently in bottle. Virna prefers to moderate the use of wood barrels in order to exalt more the real fruit and the composition of the soil, but above all to give a nice drinkability to the wine, without giving too dry or bitter tannins. Balsamic aromas, mint, licorice and violets, round, fresh, great minerality in the mouth. Wine of great character.

Description

Virna Borgogno is a real wine producer! First woman to get a degree in enology in 1988 in Italy, she decided to follow the footsteps of her father Enrico and personally cultivate the vineyard and create wines, but above all great Baroli. Hers is a historical winery and it is located in the famous town of Barolo, where she vinifies only 10 hectares between the communes of Barolo, Novello and Monforte….but above all she cultivates vineyard plots among the best ones of the appellation such as the renowned Cannubi, Sarmassa and Preda.
Virna’s style fully identifies her tough character! She cultivates the vineyard as a little gem, and in the winery she tries to maintain a traditional style but with a slightly modern touch. She likes to create territorial wines, but at the same time drinkable, not too hard!
