Virna – Barolo Cannubi – 2018

Cannubi is the vineyard with the most history and fame of the whole Barolo area. It was the first to be mentioned already in 1700, but it is mainly famous for the crossing of the two opposite geological zones which meet right in this specific parcel giving authentic wines with two distinct souls: finesse and austerity. Thanks also to the south-eastern exposure, slightly cooler, just because the vines get more sun in the morning, also the wine is affected by this, contributing to give much more acidity and freshness. Virna was able to perfectly interpret the complexity of this cru, with 40/50 years old vines and very low yields of 50/60 quintals per hectare, the wine was aged for 18 months in tonneaux and large casks, plus about one year in cement tanks and in bottles. The result? One of the most phenomenal Cannubi ever. Structure, freshness, intense acidity mixed with crisp tannins, head-turning aromas, licorice, black pepper, rosehip, plum, mint. One word: perfect.
I can recommend any vintage regarding this Cannubi, certainly different in structure, but the technique is infallible and the wine is better every year. If you want a technically perfect wine to keep in time and centuries, but with a more vertical structure the 2016 is for you, if you want a wine with structure, but wider but that has been able to give head to many other great vintages with that touch more mentholated and acidic the 2017 is for you! and finally the newcomer the 2018, herbaceous, still a child, dry, crisp tannins but that in a few months will show what it is worth. Every one of his wines is worth it! All to keep, never full bodied, but with an amazing persistence in the mouth!!!

Description

Virna Borgogno is a real wine producer! First woman to get a degree in enology in 1988 in Italy, she decided to follow the footsteps of her father Enrico and personally cultivate the vineyard and create wines, but above all great Baroli. Hers is a historical winery and it is located in the famous town of Barolo, where she vinifies only 10 hectares between the communes of Barolo, Novello and Monforte….but above all she cultivates vineyard plots among the best ones of the appellation such as the renowned Cannubi, Sarmassa and Preda.
Virna’s style fully identifies her tough character! She cultivates the vineyard as a little gem, and in the winery she tries to maintain a traditional style but with a slightly modern touch. She likes to create territorial wines, but at the same time drinkable, not too hard!
