Ugo Lequio – Barbera d’Alba Superiore Vigna Gallina – 2017

For those who know this small but magnificent producer cannot fail to be charmed by his wines even if it is a Barbera. The vineyards are located within the Cru of Gallina in the commune of Neive, the same vineyard from which Barbaresco is made, but always positioned towards the south in a cooler area with slightly more clayey soils and plants over 50 years old. A selection is made of well-ripened bunches that are vinified in contact with the skins for about 12 days in steel vats, malolactic fermentation and aging are carried out in large 25 Hl oak barrels for 20 months with further rest in the bottle for 6 months. A stunning result that underlines the essence of the winery’s work, notes of ripe fruit and cocoa that are just the foretaste of a juicy drink where there is remarkable wine structure, softness and impetuous body.

Ugo Lequio humble winemaker, is someone who has done the hard work, got his hands dirty as I like to define him, who still today after 40 years of experience behind him as a farmer and winemaker remains with his feet on the ground and tries every year to make great wines with the sole purpose of respecting the natural timing of the wines. The winery owns 6 hectares of vineyards located mainly in the municipality of Neive where the winery is based, Treiso and Guarene.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the main grape variety in the winery is Nebbiolo where two excellent Barbareschi are produced with plants almost 70 years old in the first-class Gallina vineyard, famous for its completely southern position, giving wines of great structure but among the most elegant ever. Of course, in the winery space is also given to wines defined as simpler such as Barbera and the white berry grape Arneis, vinified with traditional techniques and put on the market only when the wines are good and ready. Genuine wines, made in very few quantities but with an exquisiteness and refinement that is really hard to find nowadays.
