Elvio Cogno – Barbera d’Alba Pre-Phylloxera – 2020

This Barbera comes from one of the last rare examples of a vineyard planted with “piede franco,” that is, without the grafting of the American vine, where original 100-year-old vines still exist without having been affected by Filossera. This unique setting is located in the Borgata Berri of La morra, thanks to the perfect combination of limestone soils and altitude here the vines manage to provide natural protection from Phylloxera attack. Only 2,000 bottles of this amazing Barbera are produced, where the wine has aged 12 months in large oak barrels and a few months in the bottle. A lady Barbera, playing on structure and freshness, with great body and flavor, suitable for aging. A Barbera to be compared to Barolo.

Description

Elvio Cogno, now one of the most renowned wineries for the production of Barolo, but the road to success was by no means easy. Born in 1936 with a dream of producing great Barolo, only after years of experience and collaborations with other wineries did he manage to buy a farmhouse in Novello in the 1980s. Finally in the 1990s, thanks also to the arrival of his daughter Nadia and brother-in-law Walter, the first label of Barolo “Ravera,” one of the most important crus in the commune of Novello, was released. The winery’s philosophy is absolutely traditional, with the exclusive use of large oak barrels and respect for the land, enhancing in the wines the characteristics of the soils, creating austere wines with a great capacity to evolve over time.
