Allegrini – La Poja Corvina Veronese – 2016

The name derives from “La Poja” one of the many estates owned by the family, in this case it is located at the top of the hill of la Grola in Sant’Ambrogio within the Valpolicella Classica area. Thanks to its altitude and position it proved to be a perfect place for Corvina, where the poor and calcareous soils are characterized by a white surface which works as a means of reflection of sun rays on the grapes giving an excellent ripening. Made with 100% Corvina whose vines are about 42 years old, the grapes are harvested overripe and fermented in steel tanks for 12/15 days with periodic pumping over. Refinement continues both in Allier barriques and in large Slavonian oak casks for 28 months followed by 10 months in bottle. Becoming one of the pearls of the selection, it is characterized by a rich nose of fruit which evolves in balsamic scents where the sip is deep and intense highlighting the unique properties of this grape.

Description

The history of the Allegrini family goes back centuries in one of the most sensational landscapes of the Valpolicella. The name already means “The valley of the many wineries” between Lake Garda and Verona, with landscapes rich in waterways and limestone soils where we find grapes and unique winemaking techniques that give rise to iconic wines such as Amarone and Recioto. Since the sixteenth century they are located in Fumane dedicating themselves from the beginning to the cultivation and production of wine, however the real activity begins with Giovanni Allegrini, a true lover of his work with the only goal of transmitting the essence of his wines “from one barrel to another”. The turning point came with his sons Franco and Marilisa who, following their father’s footsteps, in complete synergy improved the whole production system, asserting themselves and expanding at an international level. Today they own more than 100 hectares of land in the heart of Valpolicella Classica, divided into various municipalities, where they cultivate both the native and historical varieties of the region such as Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella and allochthonous vines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with new farming systems. Trying new challenges dictated by the aim of qualitative perfection, they have combined the traditional style with avant-garde techniques from the winemaking process with the introduction of barriques, through the reduction of the aging period to the technique of Ripasso and drying of the grapes. A set of factors which made them a flagship winery of Veneto where now drinking one of their wines is not just an experience but a real guarantee.
